Type Doodle no.763

I was practicing script lettering and thought the illustration of meaningful phrases might be a bit more exciting than simply doing the alphabet over and over.
Here's a doodle of one of my all-time favorite Latin quotes:

This saying means, Do what you are doing, essentially, live your life as it is happening. Occupying your mind with thoughts of yesterday or tomorrow will not help you do today. When I look at this phrase, I affix my own personal interpretation that it advises one should truly devote oneself to each thing one does, thus really experiencing each moment and being able to give our best effort. To live as well as you potentially can, you must first make sure you're right up front, with pencils ready to receive the lessons Life has to teach... not absent at home, or tardy somewhere, wandering the halls of your own head.

A is for Another self project

I came up with the idea for this letter at work the other day when, after completing everything on my task list, I was left with a 45 minute time block to myself. I took the time to doodle in my sketchbook while perusing the company blog.
Here's the original drawing:

Buh-buh-buh-boredom has stricken!

And the result is this lovely little letter.

A fun indulgent little afternoon project to distract myself from the other tasks at hand... I'm sure you can relate. But hey, all is justifiable as long as you're being productive! Right?... right?

P is for popcorn

This week's Alphabattle letter on Lettercult.com was P. After constructing the letter, I thought it would be fun to come up with a functional use for it. It was more than obvious that this letter would be perfect for a popcorn container.

N in a night.

My one hour projects are starting to go a little more smoothly.

This was my sketch:I'm glad I didn't go in the doily valentine direction and opted with a more formal approach. A helpful trick I learned: stop trying to do so much extraneous crap and just make something that looks clean and nice.

Check out www.lettercult.com tomorrow, they'll have all the other submissions.

I present...I.

Playtime. Not the best thing I've ever done, but not everything needs to be.
Check out my sweet potbelly. Potbellies are sexy, Butch.

Also check out www.lettercult.com
The Alphabattle they've got going is awesome and there are some really talented submitters. It's a great source of inspiration and motivation, and a fun project!

Pages from my sketchbook

Because everyone likes to catch a glimpse into the creative process, and because people seemed to really enjoy the title designs in my senior thesis pieces... here's some type sketches from the earlier stages of that project.

And because I like that every time I show someone my sketchbook they always end up saying "What the hell, Kristin?" ...here's some of the weird stuff I think about to keep myself entertained.

H is for happiness, hermitage, hamsters, and hatred

...and these are a few of my favorite things. But of all the aforementioned, I think this particular H suits the latter best.

My mom says it feels masculine, like a logo for a chess club for men. She also said it reminds her of some sort of farming shear. I guess those two are related because... Amish people love board games and gender segregation. (I'm the Degrees of Kevin Bacon champ!)

Whaddup G?

It has been a ridiculously jam packed couple of weeks, and now that it's coming to an end, everyone keeps telling me to take a break and relax. They say I've earned it.
Buuuuut sitting is hard for me. This is how I take a break from "work."

And also by doing this:

Which, actually, is more like doing homework than one would immediately realize. I have been learning priceless things from Bugs Bunny cartoons, I'll tell you what.

Only in art school can your homework be about monkeys and beer.

I am so so happy with this, it's my favorite piece of the whole semester thusfar. After revising the first version, I thought "Damn it! Why didn't I pick beer bottles for my thesis?!" (Though I'm sure I'll have just as much fun with what I did pick... SECRETS TO BE REVEALED SPRING 2010)
